Las Vegas Beats The Odds,
Sink Belmont Shore In ChampionshipGLENDALE, CO., June 6 – With a convincing 36-22 win over Belmont Shore, last year’s runner-up Las Vegas won their shot at redemption by clinching the Division I Championship at Infinity Park here today.
Belmont Shore opened quickly, scoring their first Try in less than five minutes but missed on the conversion kick. Las Vegas scored a Try at the 10 minute mark to tie the score. Each team added a Try but Las Vegas also added a three point penalty kick to lead at halftime 13-10. Kicking proved a key factor in the game as Belmont Shore only managed one conversion kick while not attempting a three-point penalty or drop kick.
Las Vegas led 24-10 before Belmont Shore got back on the scoreboard with a Try and two point conversion kick to draw within seven points. Belmont Shore added one late Try but Las Vegas answered back with one of their own to make the final score 36-22. In the end the Las Vegas semifinal game against Life University proved a lot closer than the championship match. In that game the action boiled down to a penalty kick at the whistle that put Las Vegas into Sunday’s championship.
The Churchill Cup returns to action here Wednesday, June 9, with the England Saxons playing Russia here at 3 p.m. followed by a games between France A and Uruguay at 5:30 p.m. The USA Eagles rematch with England follows on Sunday, June 13 at 1 p.m.
